Queen's visit to Finland in September 2006
In September 2006 Catherine Monaghan visited Savonlinna, Finland to teach on the 13th International Community Nursing/Community Assessment Module.
Sirkka Eramaa and Kristiina Karjalainen from Savonlinna, were the senior lecturers co-ordinating the module. As well as Catherine, other visiting teachers were from Belgium and Nepal. The nursing students were from Finland, Poland and Taiwan.
Some of the main areas which were explored throughout the module were community needs assessment, analysis and diagnosis, community profiling, partnership model, the community as client and planning a health program. The module also involved carrying out a community assessment in a local community with the residents and the community professionals. Students attended class daily and time was set aside for community assessment visits. Opportunities arose for the students to develop awareness in cultural, social and health related issues of differing countries.
Catherine thoroughly enjoyed being part of the team who delivered this International Community Module and everyone was extremely friendly and helpful during her stay in Savonlinna.
