| Nursing and Midwifery |
The School of Nursing and Midwifery is the foremost provider of Nursing and Midwifery education in Northern Ireland with approximately 3,500 students.
The School was established in 1991 and provides a range of innovative courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level which prepares nurses, midwives and health visitors for leadership roles in clinical care, teaching, management and research. Queen's has one of the most extensive portfolios of post registration programmes of any nursing school in Ireland or the UK.
The School was judged as "excellent" in teaching by the Quality Assurance Agency and commended, in particular, for support and guidance given to students.
The School has a visiting scholars programme with staff and students exchange schemes in place.
Education
The School provides undergraduate nursing education, offering a degree or diploma in one of the four branches of nursing ie. adult, children's, mental health and learning disability.
The School also offers an undergraduate BSc (Hons) in Midwifery Studies and a direct-entry 3 year degree entry programme in Midwifery.
In addition the School offers a wide range of continuing professional development and postgraduate programmes in Nursing and Midwifery at a variety of levels. The programmes include stand alone modules, short courses, specialist practice degrees, postgraduate certificates and masters courses.
Students can undertake an MPhil or PhD. Many of these programmes are inter-disciplinary and shared with other health care practitioners.
Clinical Education Centre
The Clinical Education Centre is located on the Lower Ground Floor of the Medical Biology Centre, 97 Lisburn Road. It is one of the most advanced Clinical Education Centres in Europe providing a wide range of educational materials for student use and the most up-to-date simulation facilities where students gain practice in a safe environment.
Registry
The Registry Office is located beside Reception and it is open to students from 10.00 am to 12 noon and 2.00 pm to 4.00 pm. If you need to contact staff outside these times, please ring 028 9097 5714/5719. Registry is responsible for recruitment and the maintenance of all student records and must be notified of any changes to the information held on your personal file, for example change of name, change of home or term address (forms available from School Reception). The Registry Staff will be happy to assist you with any queries you may have in relation to:

Research Unit
The School has a Nursing and Midwifery Research Unit which focuses on Health Services Research drawing on multi-disciplinary links across the University. The School has a vibrant research culture with international research links and international students undertaking PhD studies.
Clinical Allocations
The Clinical Allocations Unit is responsible for allocating students to their various clinical placement areas. Students are on placement for half of their undergraduate course – 18 months out of the 3 years. The placements are designed to provide meaningful experience in relation to the courses being studied and ensure theory and practice are intrinsically linked.
International Unit
Queen's is one of the leading universities in the UK and is highly regarded and known internationally for its teaching, research and leadership.
The School has a visiting scholars' programme with staff and student exchange schemes in place. For example, students undertaking the BSc (Hons) in Health Studies can spend some time in America as part of the programme and undergraduate students may have the opportunity for placement in Hungary, Norway, Finland, Sweden, Romania and USA (Kansas). There is a growing international focus in the School and students will have the opportunity to meet nurses and midwives from other countries.
Thorn
The School of Nursing and Midwifery has been awarded the prestigious Thorn accreditation, the first and only institution in the whole of Ireland to offer this nationally and internationally validated training.
The aim of the Thorn-accredited training is to facilitate the development of psychosocial approaches to the provision of care for seriously mentally ill people and their families, within a multidisciplinary and multi-agency context.
